Both John Lee Shirasaya model O-Tanto

Tanto John Lee Shirasaya model O-Tanto forged by hand. This Tanto is particularly long. With a total length of 57 cm, it far exceeds the usual size. Characteristic:

  • The blades of the swords are hand forged from high carbon steel and traditionally hardened.
  • The sharp blades are grooved with a Bo-Hi (fuller) to reduce weight.
  • The ends of the handle are particularly long and are attached to the hilt with two bamboo pegs (Mekugi). Therefore, the swords can be completely disassembled.
  • The collars of the blades (Habaki) are made of metal.
  • The hilts and scabbards (Saya) are made of wood.

Shirasaya was a specific sword mount designed to ensure better preservation of the blade at night or in case of prolonged disuse. The advantage of untreated magnolia wood was its low acidity and the absence of other substances that could damage the leaf. It received no further treatment, it absorbed the moisture from the sword and channeled it. The Tanto remained dry and rust free.

Shirasaya often bore a signature ('Sayagaki') with details about the blade's origin, such as the place and time of forging, as well as the name of the swordsmith and advisor. As the Emperor outlawed the carrying of sharp weapons in the late 19th century, the trimmings and fittings around the hilt and tsuba were trimmed away, leading to the birth of the Shirasaya design as we know it today. The resemblance of this Tanto to a wooden sword or club would allow its owner to go unnoticed and continue to carry it with them.
