Gladius is the Roman term for the sword. It had a length of approximately half a meter but as also made. Roman soldiers were practical at the time of killing their enemies and to plunge the tip of the gladius 5 centimeters in the body of the opponent was enough to bring him down. Roman gladius were adapted from the short swords used by the Celts mercenaries (hispaniensis gladius) in the service of Hannibal during the Punic Wars.
