The German Quillon Dagger is based on an original from the early 16th century. example (ca. 1510-1540) which is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York City. The blade is made of EN45 spring steel, has a diamond cross section and tapers to a needle-sharp point. The cutting edges are not sharp and the tang is bolted to the pommel (top nut). The artistically designed guard and pommel are made of aged brass and the hilt itself is carved from wood. The guard features slightly flared quillons and a B-shaped side ring, and the hexagonal pommel flares upwards into a flat, ornate cap.
This Landsknecht dagger / knight's dagger comes complete with a carefully stitched, vegetable-tanned leather sheath fitted with beautifully ornate antique brass fittings (a cape ending in a button finial and a throat with articulated suspension rings for attachment to a a belt).
Please note that this renaissance dagger is not a battle ready weapon. It is designed as a collector's or decoration/display item and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collector's item, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
The late medieval/Renaissance quillon dagger got its name from the shape of its guard, which was essentially a scaled-down version of the crusades (double quillons) found on swords of the time. Often fitted with a protruding ring or half ring on one side of the guard, this particular type of dagger was designed to parry or block enemy blades in close combat, and its sharp blade with a pointed tip was ideal for piercing padded armor. and chain mail or stab the opponent through the joints of their plate armor. Usually carried as a sidearm to a sword or rapier, and appearing in many variations, the parry dagger enjoyed great popularity among knights, landsknechte (the notorious, mostly German mercenaries of the late 15th century and XVI) and even wealthy citizens.
