Hoplite shield

Replica of the shield used by the Hoplites of the State-Cities of Ancient Greece. The shield is made of hand-painted plywood. On the back it has leather and rope fasteners. The diameter of the shield is approximately 97 cm.

The hoplite was a soldier-citizen of the State-Cities of Ancient Greece.1 Its name derives from hoplon, which means "article of armament" or "equipment". He was a heavy infantryman, as opposed to the gymnast and the psilós, soldiers of light infantry.

Its TThe soldiers probably appeared at the end of the 7th century BC. C. They were part of a citizen militia, armed as lancers. These were relatively easy to assemble and maintain, and they could also pay the cost of armament. Almost all known Greeks of classical antiquity fought as hoplites, including philosophers and playwrights.
