The Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem has its origins around the year 1070, when a group of Italian merchants built a hospital in Jerusalem to care for pilgrims. When the popularity of the Templars grows, the Hospitallers decide to change to warrior monks in order to get the donations that the military orders received, although they never left their assistance and charity functions. In 1306 they invaded the island of Rhodes and established their headquarters there. Later they moved to the island of Malta, where they continued to maintain the independence of their state and became known as 'The Knights of Malta'.
