Who was the Cid Campeador?

Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, known as the Cid Campeador, was a Castilian knight of the 11th century who, independently and without paying vassalage to any king, managed to conquer the Spanish Levant, establishing his capital in Valencia.

Characteristics of the Tizona Sword

The Tizona Sword is one of the two swords, along with the Colada, that legendary tradition attributes to the Cid, until he gave them to his sons-in-law, the Infantes of Carrión. The Tizona Sword is a straight blade sword that is characterized by having both sides of the guard with a curved shape. The knob also has a characteristic medieval design.

History of the Tizona Sword

The Tizona Sword is one of the most popular Spanish swords. Belonging to the Cid Campeador, it was captured from King Búcar of Morocco in Valencia, and he later gave it to his nephew, Pedro Bermúdez.

The Cantar de Mío Cid mentions El Cid's fight with Ramón Berenguer II, Count of Barcelona, in Tevar (Morella), whom he defeats, takes him prisoner and takes possession of the Colada sword.

Did the Tizona Sword really exist?

All the information we have is through the Cantar de Mio Cid where the sword Tizona and the Colada are named, but there is no historical treatise that can really corroborate the existence of these swords. Currently, there is an original Tizona Sword exhibited in the Museum of Burgos.

Other Swords of the Cid Campeador

The other famous sword that is attributed to the Cid Campeador according to the Cantar del Mio Cid is the Tizón sword, a word that comes from the Latin titio, synonymous with ember, burning log.

Replicas of the Tizona Sword

The replicas of the Tizona sword that we sell have various finishes and are normally not made for fighting but rather for recreationists and collectors.
