The bow is a weapon that has endured throughout history, used by various peoples and cultures. With a rope and an arched base, its main function has been to launch arrows at high speed to hit and pierce the enemy. Although it is currently used mainly as a sports tool, its evolution over the centuries has been fascinating.

Bow Features

The bow is made up of a generally elastic string and an extremely strong arched base. This structure allows it to resist the tension generated when pulling the string to launch the arrow. In the beginning, the ropes were usually made of animal hair or resistant plants, while the base was predominantly ash wood. Over time, manufacturing techniques have improved, as have the materials used.

Evolution of the Arc in History

Bows have undergone a notable evolution throughout history. Improvements were made to increase shooting speed and accuracy. The first bows date back to the Stone Age, but even today bows are produced for sporting competitions and hobbies. Arrows have also evolved, from primitive ones with a wooden base and stone or bone tips, to current ones with carbon fiber bases, plastic stabilizers and metal tips. The bow, initially a hunting tool, transformed into a lethal long-range weapon in battle.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Bow as a Weapon

The bow has advantages and disadvantages as a weapon:

  • It allows you to hit the enemy from a long distance, without giving him the opportunity to counterattack, which is especially useful for infantry and cavalry, creating numerical superiority on the battlefield.
  • It can be used to create fires with incendiary arrows and block the advance of enemy troops.
  • Offers the ability to eliminate the enemy with precision in a single shot.

However, the use of the bow requires great precision and its preparation is relatively slow. Furthermore, the number of arrows was usually limited, forcing archers to carry secondary weapons in battle.

Medieval Archers

Medieval archers were warriors who used the bow as their main weapon. They usually carried a short sword or dagger as a secondary weapon. To protect themselves, they used a helmet that covered the back of the neck and, sometimes, the face. They carried a quiver full of arrows and an archer's armband to protect the arm holding the bow. These warriors had the ability to position themselves in different places during battles:

  • On the castle walls, shooting from the top of the walls.
  • On the battlefield, in the rear of the formation, often on high ground compared to the infantry.
  • Even on horseback, becoming knight archers.

In our catalog, we offer replicas of arches for all tastes and ages, with high quality materials, even if their use is exclusively decorative. Discover a wide selection of arches that will transport you to medieval times and its legacy.
