Viking Swords: Weapons of Power and Tradition

Viking Swords were very effective one-hit offensive weapons. They were operated with one hand and were designed to cut and not to puncture. At the end of the Roman Empire, the typical short swords such as the Gladius or the Spatha predominated. The Norse began to forge longer and heavier swords, they used grooves in the blades to reduce weight and the handle was short.

As a defensive complement in battle, it was carried in the other hand as a shield.

What are Viking Swords like?

Although the weapons most used by the Vikings were axes, Norse warriors also used swords. According to Scandinavian religious beliefs, dying with a sword in your hand ensured Valhalla. Viking swords were usually straight, double-edged pieces with a blunt tip. The balance point of these swords was at the upper end, a characteristic that gave them greater weight and forcefulness. This feature allowed very powerful blows to be delivered, but recovering the sword after launching an attack was more difficult.

Typically, Viking swords were wielded with one hand and a warrior's combat equipment was completed with a wooden or metal shield. This type of weapon was perfect for being wielded in open formations or in chaotic combat situations. Ulfberth swords, a name that could refer to a renowned workshop or forge, are the best known of the Viking swords.

Parts of the Viking Sword

Pommel: Upper part of the sword that is attached to the tang of the blade.

Handle, Fist or grip: Between the pommel and the guard is the area where the sword is gripped.

Guard: Between the blade and the handle. It serves as protection for the hand.

Edge: Sharp area on both sides of the sword.

Channel, Abatanador or Vaceo: Longitudinal indentation in the middle of the sword blade that usually serves to lighten the weight of the sword.

Tip: Tip of the blade of the sword used for thrusts.

Who Were the Viking Warriors

The Viking people come from northern Europe and are famous for their plundering and exploration. During the three centuries that their supremacy lasted, the Vikings built large commercial networks and were able to reach North America. Their capacity for expansion and ferocity led them to found the Norman kingdom on the island of Sicily and even to assault the coastal enclaves of the Caliphate of Córdoba and the Byzantine Empire.

Historians believe that Viking supremacy ended at the end of the 11th century, after the decisive defeats they suffered at the battles of Stamford Bridge and Hastings.
