Pope Clement III (1187 -1191) promoted the Third Crusade in which kings participated: Frederick I Barbarossa of Germany; Philip II of France and Richard I the Lionheart of England.

Barbarossa was the first to arrive, but he could not finish the conquest because he drowned in the river on June 10, 1190. His allies Richard the Lionheart and Philip the Second had to return to their respective countries, due to the efforts of Juan sin Tierra for Richard and the conflicts between England and France urged their returns.
