The piece of Roman military equipment known as the cingulum militare was a leather belt trimmed with ornamental metal plates and often fitted with frogs (suspension devices) for the soldier's dagger. This war belt was not only used to hold up the warrior's braccae (trousers) during battle, but was also a display of military rank or honor.
The girdle was usually completed with a leather apron consisting of several narrow, flat straps (so-called pteryges or pteruges) that hung from the belt and were decorated with continuous rows of riveted metal fittings. Each strap ended with metal pendants (pensalia).

Roman legionary belt, in brown, with pteruges and brass fittings. The cingulum or balteus of the Roman legionary that we offer here is richly adorned with brass fittings.
It is inspired by an original artifact dating from the second half of the 1st century AD. C., now on display in the Central Romano-Germanic Museum in Mainz (Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz or RGZM), Germany. The hinged buckle, riveted plaques and medallions, hinged leather straps and pendants are based on original historical finds from the Mainz area.
The belt is made from strong 3mm leather and has a second suede lining to protect the wearer's tunic from the rivets that retain the decorative plates. It is perforated and adjustable to a wide range of sizes. The cingulum leather straps are made of 2mm thick leather (unlined). Each strap has an integrated loop, so it can be slipped on the belt or removed at will.
