Immerse yourself in the history of the Roman Empire with the impressive Imperial Roman Legionary Scutum Shield. This shield, used by the brave Roman legionaries, had a distinctive shape that allowed for compact formations, overlapping the shields to provide greater protection against thrown weapons. One of the most famous examples of its use is the testudo formation, in which legionnaires placed their shields forward and upwards, providing protection against projectiles fired parabolically or from above, such as arrows, javelins, and stones. The curved design of the shield allowed it to absorb heavy blows, while the sides provided additional protection for the soldier. Enemy arrows and blows could be deflected, avoiding a direct hit on the legionnaire.
The central lining of the shield, called an umbo, made of copper or iron, was also used offensively. Sufficiently heavy and dense, the umbo could stun or displace an opponent, making it easier for the legionnaire's next attack with his gladius. The edges of the shield were also lined with metal for added protection and could be used offensively. This reconstruction shield is made of wood and painted by hand, faithfully following the historical designs. The edge is protected with a brass reinforcement and the center of the shield is made of metal. For greater resistance, the shield has wooden reinforcements on the back. The handle is located inside the umbo, allowing a firm and secure grip during use.
The Imperial Roman Legionary Scutum Shield is a true piece of history, transporting you to the heyday of the Roman Empire. Add this magnificent shield to your collection or use it for historical re-enactments and immerse yourself in the world of the brave Roman legionnaires!
