Viking round shield 'Huginn & Muninn' with rawhide edge, 80 cm Ø. The large and beautiful Viking shield that we offer here is made of approx. 13mm thick plywood and elaborately embellished with two ravens.
At its center, the shield features a large steel bulge that is held firmly in place with four rivets and leaves enough room to accommodate even the strongest Viking hands. The edge of the shield is lined with rawhide (parchment), and the back is fitted with three riveted wooden reinforcing strips. The central strip also serves as a handle and is lined with leather in its middle part for a comfortable grip.
The twin bird motif is a depiction of Odin's faithful messengers Hugin and Munin (or Huginn and Muninn), a recurring theme in Viking art. In Norse mythology, ravens fly over Asgard and Midgard, returning each night to the Father of the Gods (also known as Hrafnáss, the 'raven god') to tell him all that they have seen and heard.
Although this early medieval wooden shield may be a little too thin for full contact, it's still a great accessory for reenactment, LARP, stage, or TV/film and will make your transformation into a proud Norse warrior just perfect. In addition, it is also a nice collector's or display piece for all Viking Age enthusiasts.
