In 1936, a silver hoard from the early 10th century was found during excavations in the Swedish village of Stora Ryk in the municipality of Färgelande in Dalsland, near the Norwegian border. Farm worker Ewald Andersson was digging a trench for a water pipe when he suddenly came across what he thought was a stone with his shovel. It turned out to be part of a soapstone pot that had been placed on top of a Viking silver hoard buried two feet deep. In addition to a magnificent brooch, Stora Ryk's hoard contained an array of silver beads, semiprecious stones, and glass, various silver and bronze pendants, and a necklace. Since its discovery, the Stora Ryk silver hoard has been in the Statens Historiska Museet and in the Royal Numismatic Collection.
