Viking leather bag model Birka. As similar remains have also been found at the Viking settlement of Birka in eastern Sweden, the general term for this particular type of bag is often used as Birka bag or Birka bag. However, archaeologists believe that its origins are more to be found in the Magyars, a nomadic people of horsemen (today Hungarians). These belt bags are supposed to have found their way from the eastern steppes to Scandinavia by traders in the 8th to 10th centuries. The most typical features of this Hungarian-style leather bag or purse (also called Tarsoly) were its contour in lyre shape and the elaborate metal accessories that adorned the front lapel.
