Viking leather bag model Tarsoly. Beautifully crafted from 4mm thick leather, this high quality Viking Age Tarsoly bag is a reconstruction of a Hungarian grave find. The remains of the bag were excavated from grave no. 41 west of Karos, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. The highlight is the brass fittings that are modeled after the original historical pieces and make this bag a real gem.

As similar remains have also been found at the Viking settlement of Birka in eastern Sweden, the general term for this particular type of bag is often used as Birka bag or Birka bag. However, archaeologists believe that its origins are more to be found in the Magyars, a nomadic people of horsemen (today Hungarians). These belt bags are supposed to have found their way from the eastern steppes to Scandinavia by traders in the 8th to 10th centuries. The most typical features of this Hungarian-style leather bag or purse were its lyre-shaped outline and the elaborate metallic accessories that adorned the front flap.
