Its extra-long blade offers the reach and leverage needed for powerful lunging and cutting strikes, while its wide guard and heavy pommel are useful for hooking and striking. When heavy plate armor was encountered, blade strikes were marginally effective and were often abandoned in favor of a half-sword technique, in which one hand grips the fist and the other the blade to better direct the point and make thrusts into the small openings and joints of the armor with greater precision.
