When heavy plate armor was encountered, blade strikes were marginally effective and were often abandoned in favor of a half-sword technique, in which one hand grips the fist and the other the blade to better direct the point and make thrusts into the small openings and joints of the armor with greater precision.

Additionally, the simple cruciform grip is fully functional, with its wide downward-sloping guard, leather-over-wood grip, and fishtail counterweight.
