Although Prince Oberyn Martell only appeared in a single season of the TV show, he definitely left a lasting impression on the Game of Thrones® audience. Both her entrance and exit were quite dramatic in their own particular way, and just a few episodes were enough to establish her character as a fan favorite. The younger brother of Doran Martell, ruler of Dorne, Oberyn was commonly known as The Red Viper due to both his knowledge of poisons and his fierce, unpredictable, and often lethal fighting style. His weapon of choice was a long, striking Dornish spear with a wavy-edged blade and a point. It was adorned with a tassel made of snakeskin and two serpentine snakes wrapped around the base of the spearhead. Acting as Tyrion Lannister's champion during Tyrion's trial by combat for the murder of King Joffrey, it was this very spear (poisoned at the tip) that Oberyn wielded in his brutal fight against crown champion Gregor Clegane, aka like The Mountain. But after dealing Clegane what appeared to be a fatal blow, he made the fatal mistake of reveling too soon in his victory... In one last act of violence before his own demise, Clegane managed to best Martell and crush his skull with his bare hands, treating viewers to one of the most spectacular and shocking death scenes in television history, a scene that has long achieved iconic status among the GoT community.
