This helmet takes its name from the German word 'Spange', which refers to the metal strips that joined the steel plates to form the helmet. Made from high-quality steel, the Thorsten has a simple yet robust structure, based on a metal band that connects the different plates of the helmet, providing a strong and secure base.

The conical design of the helmet is achieved by riveting the metal plates together, and chainmail was often added to the back for extra protection. This simple and effective head protection solution became one of the most common in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.
