After the Council of Clermont in 1096, a movement of believers, adventurers, monks, nobles and commoners arose from the West towards the territories occupied by the infidels in the East. This later became known in the chronicles as the Crusades. The ultimate goal, at least in intentions, was to free the Holy Sepulcher and hand it over to Christian hands.
