Scallop shells were used as vessels to collect and drink on the Galician coast, so in the Middle Ages it became customary to place a so-called scallop shell on the pilgrim's staff or on the clothing of the pilgrimage to the sepulcher of Santiago in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, as a sign that one had actually reached their pilgrimage destination.

In the late Middle Ages, resourceful entrepreneurs were selling metal scalloped badges or pendants on a large scale. So the scallop-shaped shell soon spread throughout Europe as a religious symbol.
