Ancient Roman spoons are commonly classified into two main types: While the cochlearium (pl. cochlearia) had a smaller bowl (also called a head) and a straight handle that tapered to a sharp point, the larger and heavier ligula (pl. ligulae) featured a rather generously sized bowl, often oval, and a handle with a rounded end or finial.
The cignus (Pl. cigni) was a particular type of ligula. This spoon also had a large oval-shaped bowl, but was equipped, unlike the common ligula, with a shortened, curved handle ending in a stylized head of a water bird or swan (Latin swan = cygnus, hence the name ).
This type of distinctively handled spoon is assigned to Late Antiquity (ca. 4th/5th century AD). Several excavations unearthed late Roman cigni made from common and noble metals (bronze, silver) and with various variations of this particular handle shape. Archaeologists believe that these short-handled spoons were primarily general-purpose eating spoons. Close examination of a number of finds, especially analysis of specific wear marks, suggests that they were most likely designed as spoons for scooping liquid foods out of bowls with curved walls. However, it cannot be ruled out that swan-headed spoons were also used as serving implements for pouring liquids.
