The arabesque motif developed from Assyrian tendril ornaments and reached Europe via Spain in the course of the 16th century with Moorish art. The arabesque usually consisted of artfully intertwined lines of stylized tendrils of plants. Stunningly beautiful arabesques can be found in the halls of the Alhambra in Granada. The arabesque even found its way into heraldry: while simple, regular figures such as crosses and meanders were widespread in the Middle Ages, broad, ornate tendril structures on coats of arms became increasingly common in the Renaissance.
