The tabard or surcoat (also surcote, German: Wappenrock, Waffenrock, or Waffenkleid) arose in the 12th century and was worn over their armor by many crusaders.
The red cross was meant to be eye-catching, showing that the crusader was fighting for the liberation of Jerusalem and the Christian faith.
