1796 British heavy cavalry saber

Introducing the 1796 British Heavy Cavalry Saber, also known as Sharpe's sword, made famous by Bernard Cornwell's popular book series and the British television series of the mid-90s. This imposing sword, with a total length of 100 cm, it was used by the British Lifeguards, Royal Horse Guards, Dragoon Guards and Dragoons during the Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, standing out in emblematic battles such as Salamanca and Waterloo.

This saber was copied directly from Austria's Pallasch 1769 heavy cavalry sword. The British cavalry officer John Le Marchant, during the Netherlands Campaign in 1793-95, made detailed drawings of the weapons of the Austrian Cavalry Army and probably recommended this design to his superiors.

The 1796 heavy cavalry sword is a straight blade with a cutting edge and a thickened spine along most of its length, providing greater strength. It is not a sword for delicate maneuvers, but a blunt weapon, popular for its robustness and effectiveness in combat. Additionally, troops used the guard as an improvised brass knuckle.

The blade is forged with a single wide channel on each side, ensuring its integrity and rigidity. The cuff is made of ribbed leather, providing a firm and comfortable grip. The basket-shaped guard has ears riveted through the tang of the blade, guaranteeing a very secure engagement between the handle and the blade.

The grip combines a perforated disc guard with two semicircular and six oval holes, a single knuckle, and two thin 51mm long lugs extending from the front. These tabs securely hold the throat of the sheath, adding an additional level of security and functionality.

This saber comes sharpened and includes a steel scabbard, completing a historic and functional set. Ideal for collectors, historical recreationists or anyone passionate about military history, the 1796 British Heavy Cavalry Saber is not only a stunning piece of craftsmanship, but also a testament to the bravery and tradition of British cavalry.

Purchase this magnificent piece of history and feel the strength and power of one of the most iconic weapons of the Napoleonic Wars!
