The grave from which the Viking ax was recovered dates to ca. 970/971 AD and is believed to be the last resting place of a man of high status, even princely. The small iron ax was richly embellished with engravings inlaid with precious metals, leading to the assumption that it may have been a ceremonial or prestige weapon rather than a mere throwing or battle axe.
The original piece, as well as many more grave goods and textile remains from the so-called Mammen Find (Danish: Mammenfundet) are on display at the National Museum of Denmark (Nationalmuseet) in Copenhagen.

The Mammen ax was excavated from a 10th century burial mound in Mammen, Jutland, Denmark, and is considered one of the most amazing and beautiful archaeological finds from the Viking Age. This unique piece lent its name to the Viking art style of the same name.
The Viking ax that we offer here reproduces some of the engraved motifs of the original artifact. The high carbon steel ax head is approx. 10.5 cm long, blunt edge and is mounted on an approx. Wooden shaft 60 cm long.
Please note that this medieval ax is not a battle-ready weapon. It is primarily designed as a collector's item or decoration/display item and is in no way suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its collectible quality, it is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your Viking outfit.
