Discover the authentic Medieval Tabard of the Teutonic Knights in natural and black tones! This calf-length tunic is made from durable cotton fabric and features a straight fit with side slits from the waist down, as well as slightly shorter slits at the center front and back. In addition, it stands out with the cross of the Teutonic Order on the chest.
The tabard emerged in the 12th century and was worn by knights over their plate armor or chain mail. Its primary design was to protect the wearer from direct sunlight on the battlefield, and the different color combinations were a crucial means of distinguishing allies from enemies in the fray. During the crusades, many knights wore tabards to identify themselves as crusaders.
Numerous illustrations attest to the prevalence of these knightly robes in the Middle Ages, such as the paintings of the Morgan Bible (also known as the Maciejowski Bible or Crusader Bible), a medieval picture bible from the 13th century, and the miniatures of the Codex Manesse, an illuminated manuscript of songs from the early 14th century.
A distinctive feature of the tabard is its simple, straight cut. For an authentic look, we recommend pairing the tunic with a leather belt.

- Looseness is included in the pattern and is reflected in the final measurements.
As authentic as possible, as modern as necessary! This medieval tabard is part of Battle-Merchant's line of historical and medieval clothing for men, women and children. From the first sketch to the last stitch, this garment was planned, designed and made with special attention to details. Our garments are inspired (sometimes precisely, sometimes more loosely) by historical examples, tomb finds and original museum pieces where they exist.
