After the Council of Clermont in 1096, a movement of believers, adventurers, monks, nobles, and commoners developed, moving from the west to the infidel-occupied territories in the east. This took its name in the chronicles of the crusades.
The ultimate goal, at least in their intentions, was to free the Holy Sepulcher and entrust it to Christian hands. And for a short period of time this work was successful.
From and for this purpose a series of monastic orders of knights were born, combining the strength of the sword with the tenacity of faith. The Templars, the Hospitallers, the Jerusalemites, but also the Teutons (further north), had a well-established pecking order and uniforms marked with unmistakable symbols, which allowed them to be recognized even at the focal point of the battle.
Even the individual warriors, who did not fall within the hierarchies of the military groups, had their cloaks marked by more or less large and varied crosses, to reveal to all the final objective of their intentions; For this reason, all of them could be indicated with the generic name of the Crusaders.
