Padded medieval gambeson, black color

This thick padded prawn is handcrafted from black cotton. It can be adjusted with leather straps and brass buckles at the front, allowing adjustment to different body measurements. Its interior is lined with cotton felt.

Prawns became common in the 10th century and were largely intended as a layer under chain mail. In the later years of the medieval era, it became common for soldiers to wear a substantially thicker gambeson, as their main armor. Padded with many layers of cloth, typically linen, a gambeson could act as armor and give its wearer excellent protection against cuts from the sword. It could even stop arrows in some circumstances.
