Delve into authenticity and history with this pack of 25 pieces of steel for lamellar armor. Both scale armor and lamellar armor are ancient forms of armor composed of overlapping plates (sheets) joined together in horizontal rows to form a dense mesh reminiscent of fish scales. While scale armor was additionally sewn, riveted, or tied to a sturdy backing made of padded cloth or thick leather, lamellar did not require any covering.
Widely used in various cultures and eras, these armors featured a variety of styles, shapes and patterns. The materials used were equally diverse, from metals such as iron, steel and bronze, to thick, stiff leather, and even horn or ivory.
When masterfully crafted, this type of body armor was virtually impenetrable to cuts and thrusts, providing excellent protection against blunt impact weapons. Popular among warriors from the Middle East, Asia, Rome, and the Vikings, scale chain mail continued to be used well into the Middle Ages.
This set of 25 loose steel scales we offer here is the perfect addition for ambitious re-enactors wishing to create their own custom lamellar armor. The scales are ideal for both DIY projects and repairing, customizing or expanding existing armor.
The small angled plates are made of approximately 23 gauge steel and feature a sharp tip and center rib. They are equipped with 5 pre-drilled holes, the largest hole allows you to tie, sew or rivet them to a backing, and the smaller holes on the sides allow the scales to be attached to each other for added stability.
- Scale thickness: about 0.6/0.7mm (23/22 gauge)
- Drilling holes diameter: large hole about 3mm Ø, small holes about 2mm Ø
- Weight: about 1.5 g per flake, about 38 g for the whole set (25 pieces)
Bring history to life and bring your own creations to life with these Lamellar Armor Steel Scales!
