The hoplite was a citizen-soldier of the City-States of Ancient Greece.1 Its name derives from hoplon, which means "item of weaponry" or "equipment". He was a heavy foot soldier, as opposed to the gymnet and psilos, light foot soldiers.
These soldiers probably appeared at the end of the 7th century BC. C. They were part of a citizen militia, armed as spearmen. These were relatively easy to assemble and maintain, plus they could afford the cost of armaments. Almost all known Greeks of classical antiquity fought as hoplites, including philosophers and playwrights.
