Themistocles 525 - 460 BC C. was an Athenian politician and general. Member of the new generation of politicians who gained preponderance during the beginnings of Athenian democracy, along with his great rival Aristides. As a politician, Themistocles was close to the people, and enjoyed the support of the Athenian lower classes, which, in general, pitted him against the nobility. Chosen archon in 493 a. C., took a series of measures to increase the naval power of Athens, something that would become a recurring throughout his political career. He fought in Marathon during the First Medical War, being one of the ten Athenian strategoi mentioned by Herodotus.
