Bishop's mantle with leather straps. A bishop's mantle is a collar of chain mail that covers the neck, shoulders, and upper chest and back. It was especially favored by the German Landknechte (mercenary soldiers) in the 15th and 16th centuries and is woven similar to a mail coif. The shape of this piece of chain mail explains its name, as it closely resembled the very wide collar of a bishop's robe.
Bishop's robes made by Ulfberth® are inspired by historical examples. They have a jagged edge. A riveted leather lining protects the area around the neck and the neckline is adjustable by means of late medieval genuine brass straps and buckles.
The RRR type of chainmail: This particular chainmail is made up exclusively of round zinc-plated rings with round rivet heads. Each ring was riveted by hand. The weave is 4 in 1. This type is called RRR (Round Ring Riveted).
