La Tizona is one of the two legendary swords attributed to El Cid, along with La Colada. According to tradition, the Cid won this sword in combat from the Count of Barcelona and later gave it to his sons-in-law, the Infantes of Carrión. However, after the affront committed by the Infantes on the daughters of El Cid, the sword was returned. El Cid, dishonored, asks the king for justice and a duel is held in which the Cid's representatives defeat the infants, annulling their weddings and also returning the swords. La Colada is once again given as a gift by El Cid to his knight Martín Antolínez.

“Martín Antolínez, my brave vassal,

take the Colada, I won it from a noble lord”

The name of the sword, according to Sebastián de Covarrubias, may owe its etymology to ""Acero Colado"", that is, clean and without impurities. Like the Tizona, in the Song of Mío Cid, the sword terrifies unworthy opponents when it is wielded by a brave warrior.

Historians also doubt that the Colada sword kept in the Royal Palace of Madrid and displayed as the authentic one is actually the real one.

The Tizona is one of the two swords, together with the Colada, that the legendary tradition attributes to the Cid, until he gave them to his sons-in-law, the Infantes of Carrión. The sword had been won in combat by the Burgos warrior from the Count of Barcelona and, despite the fact that it was given, together with the Tizona, to his sons-in-law the Infantes, it was returned by them after the affront committed against their daughters Doña Elvira and Doña Sol in the town of Corpes and which gave rise to the name of the affront that narrates the song of Mío Cid.

After the incident, El Cid had been disgraced and asked the king for justice. The trial culminates with the "riepto" or duel in which the representatives of the Cid's cause defeat the infants. They are dishonored in a public joust and their weddings are annulled, also returning the swords. Colada being given again by El Cid to his knight Martín Antolínez.

“Martín Antolínez, my pro vassal,

seize Colada, win her from a good lord"

According to Sebastián de Covarrubias, the name may owe its etymology to -Acero Colado-, or what is the same, clean and free of impurities. Like the Tizona, in the Song of Mío Cid, the sword frightens unworthy opponents if it is wielded by a valiant warrior.

Historians also doubt that the one kept in the Royal Palace of Madrid and shown as the real Colada sword is indeed the authentic one.
