The Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, known as the Knights Templar or the Order of the Temple, was one of the most famous Christian military orders. For almost two centuries, this organization remained active, protecting the lives of Christians who made pilgrimages to Jerusalem after its conquest.
Founded in 1118 or 1119 by 9 French knights led by Hugo de Payens after the First Crusade, the Templars played a fundamental role in the history of the Crusades. However, the loss of the Holy Land led to the disappearance of the Order's support.
