The history and legend of the Sword of King Arthur is closely linked to the magical and mysterious sword Excalibur and as Merlin the magician had announced, only whoever managed to remove the Excalibur sword from the rock would be king. Arthur performed this feat and kneeling before the stone, extracted from it the Excalibur blade with great ease, held it above his head and then entered the cathedral and deposited it on the altar.
Arthur was anointed with the Holy Oil and, in the presence of all the barons and common people, solemnly swore to be a loyal king to his subjects and to defend truth and justice all the days of his life. Legend and history mixed for centuries and appear closely linked: The legendary King Arthur, The Knights of the Round Table and the magical sword Excalibur.
