The Romanesque sword is thought to have originated in Spain and arrived in Rome by the Carthaginians. The Roman blacksmiths improved the steel used in the leaves of Roman swords by forging the blades with hard carbon. The Roman sword had the highest concentration of carbon in the central part of its blade, giving strength to the sword and at the same time keeping it sharp throughout its blade.

The one-handed Romanesque swords were used for training by soldiers of the Roman army. p>
