The shashka (Circassian for long knife) is a saber of Caucasian origin that was adopted by the Russian military in the 19th century and eventually became the legendary weapon of the famous Cossacks. Its most characteristic feature was its hilt, which lacked conventional guarding and was fitted with a distinctive downward pommel. Due to its unique overall design, the shashka was most effective when ridden from horseback and was therefore perfectly suited to cavalry.
The beautiful piece we offer here is a reproduction of an original 1927 Soviet pattern Cossack saber (M1927) made in 1934 at the Zlatoust Armory, USSR. This type of NKVD shashka was still in use in the ranks of the Red Army during the Second World War.
