Christopher Columbus Sword in Gold
Sword of Christopher Columbus in Gold. A wise geographer and intelligent sailor, he conceived and matured his colossal project of exploration of the Indies in the western seas, a project that he offered to several European courts and magnates and that was rudely opposed by mistrust of the company. He faced the most widespread beliefs of his time, upholding his theory of the sphericity of the earth.
Only after twenty years of multiple setbacks did he get the support of the Catholic Monarchs in Spain. He was granted three caravels, the Pinta, the Niña, and the Santa Maria, and on August 3, 1492, he set sail from the port of Palos. On October 12 of the same year it touched American land and landed on the island of Guanahani (San Salvador), and the DISCOVERY OF AMERICA began.
