Alexander III of Macedonia, better known as Alexander the Great (the great) was the king of Macedonia from 336 BC. C. until his death and is considered one of the most important military leaders in history, for his conquest of the Achaemenid Empire.

After consolidating the unification of several city-states of ancient Greece that were under the rule of his father, Philip II of Macedon, putting down the rebellion of the southern Greeks after his death, Alexander conquered the Persian Empire, including Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Judea, Gaza, Egypt, Bactria and Mesopotamia, expanding the borders of Macedonia to the Punjab region.

Before his death, Alexander had planned to return to the West and conquer Europe as well as wanting to continue the expansion towards the East and find the end of the world, an idea that his childhood tutor, Aristotle, had instilled in him by telling him stories about a place where the Earth ended and the Great Outer Sea began.

Alexander promoted the incorporation of foreigners[5] in the army and the administration through what has been defined by some academics as a "fusion policy", and favored the marriage of members of his army with foreigners, which he practiced same.

After twelve years of continuous military campaigns, Alexander died, possibly of malaria, typhoid fever, or viral encephalitis. His only offspring, a newborn who would survive him for a few months, left the empire at the mercy of his generals, known as the diadochi (successors), who divided and distributed it. More than three centuries after Greek rule and colonization in areas so far away, the last descendant of those men died, thus ending the so-called Hellenistic or Alexandrian period, which merged Greek and Middle Eastern cultures.
