Originally, gauntlets were simple mesh sacks with an opening at the cuff to allow the hand to be released. Over time, they evolved into leather gloves with an iron roundel on the back, and later into mail gloves that buttoned over the sleeve.
In the 14th century, the separation of the fingers was introduced in the gauntlets, thus allowing the use of the pistol grip. In addition, in many 15th and early 16th century tournament armor, the left hand featured a mitt with separate fingers, while the right hand was protected by a mitt for handling the spear.
