The Vårby treasure was discovered in 1871 in Huddinge in the province of Södermannland / Schwenden in the forest under a stone. In addition to the large disc brooch, two ring brooches with spherical ends in the English style and nine pendants in the Borre style and oriental style were found, as well as several oriental-type belt fittings.
The Vårby hoard was probably buried during the 9th century and had a total weight of 1.4 kg, with most of the objects being made of gold-plated silver. The site is located near the old waterway on which merchant ships sailed from Stockholm to Helgö and Birka in Viking times.
