Edward of Woodstock, England's great hero, known as the Black Prince for his armor, was a leading figure in the most important feats of arms of the Hundred Years War. He inflicted a heavy defeat on the French near Poitiers in 1356 and fought in Spain alongside Peter the Cruel.
If something distinguished him from the others, it was his bellicose character. At only 16 years old, his father, Edward III of England, knighted him, just after disembarking in a French port to undertake one of the most spectacular campaigns of the Hundred Years' War. In 1346 the Battle of Crecy confirmed the English victory, and was the baptism of fire for the Black Prince.
It was while fighting in Castile that she contracted an illness that forced her to renounce her French principality and return to England.
His triumphant career was cut short when he died at the age of 46, before succeeding his father on the throne of England.
