Hugo de Payens Sword (France, First Crusade)

Hugo de Payens sword with scabbard, France, First Crusade. Brass or nickel finishes. Hugo de Payns (1070-1136) was the first grand master and founder of the Order of the Temple and one of the first nine knights. He born in 1070 in the castle of Payns, near Troyes, France, and died in Palestine in 1136.

It is claimed that the other knights were Godfrey de Saint-Omer, Payen de Montdidier, Archambaud of Saint Agnan, Andre de Montbard, Geoffrey Bison, and two of which only the name is known, and Gondamer Rossal. the name of the ninth knight remains unknown, although some believe that could be Hugo, Count of Champagne.

Hugo de Payns served in the army of Godfrey of Bouillon during the First Crusade. He founded the order in Jerusalem who later became the Temple, and made statutes were approved at the Council of Troyes in 1128.

He led the Order for almost twenty years until his death, making it an influential international military and financial institution.
