The Medieval Brial: A Garment of Elegance and Functionality

The brial, a garment widely worn by women of Medieval High Society, was prominent from the 11th century to the end of the 15th century. Although considered a luxury outfit, its versatility and simplicity made it common even among the peasantry, made of more modest fabrics such as hemp or wool. This garment is characterized by being long and loose, requiring it to be tied at the waist with a belt or cord. Over time, this outfit came to be called "saya," a name that has survived to this day.

Luxury Details in the Brial

The briales used by the Medieval Nobility were usually made of noble fabrics and were abundantly decorated. They were often worn over other clothing items as a stylish accessory. The international trends of the prestigious textile workshops of the time were followed.

The briales featured sleeves that were decorated in various ways, including ruffles, curls, and horizontal pleats. In addition, the stitching, spirals, threads and prints stood out. The latter often incorporated motifs of Muslim influence, especially in the kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, where cultural interaction was common.

European Fashion Influences

The brial underwent numerous changes during the Middle Ages, especially in the pieces commissioned by the High Nobility. Although its basic structure was largely maintained, the decorative details made each dress unique. For example, the flamenco influence led to the creation of briales with false, lifting or removable sleeves.

Italian fashion promoted the opening of slits on the sides to show the sleeves of the shirt, forming decorative folds. In France, smaller pleats, the practice of wearing the belt below the chest, and a lower shoulder line were adopted.
