Characteristics of Viking Shields
Viking shields can have different sizes, but they are usually round. Most common shields were made by tough wooden pieces joined together with metal strips. At the rear, Viking Shields had straps made of rope or leather to wield it during the battle.

Viking warriors did not usually produce weapons or shields because most of them were looted on the battlefield. Therefore, Viking Shields were usually different from one warrior to another. Anyway, a common feature that all shields used to have were the metal umbo on the front.

Modern Viking Shield replicas can be functional or decorative. Functional replicas are used for fight recreations and LARP battles. These types of shields are prepared to receive blows and can be made of wood, metal or foam.
Decorative Viking Shields used to have some designs on the front. They are very beautiful for using them in parades or for hanging on the wall.
